American oak delivers bold, expressive flavours. Compared to French oak, it imparts more pronounced vanilla, sweet spice, and a subtle coconut note. It’s particularly well suited to full-bodied red wines, bourbon-influenced beer styles, and structured ciders that benefit from a rounder, warmer wood character.


Ideal For:

  • Red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Syrah

  • Robust beers such as Imperial Stouts, Porters, and Scotch Ales

  • Ciders where oak can add smoothness and depth


Usage Recommendations:

  • Wine & Cider: 1–3g per litre, depending on desired flavour intensity

  • Beer: 0.5–2g per litre for most styles

Always start on the low end of the range and sample over time—flavour extraction increases with contact. Oak chips can be added during secondary fermentation or aging. For best results, sanitize the chips by steaming or soaking briefly in hot water before use.

Expect to start tasting the oak after 1–2 weeks, with full flavour typically developing within 4–8 weeks.
